Mayor Turner Gives Update On Fifth Ward/Kashmere Gardens Cancer/Creosote Contamination

Mayor Sylvester Turner joins Senator Borris L. Miles, and representatives from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas Department of State Health Services, community leaders and other elected officials to discuss recent developments around the creosote contamination and cancer cluster in Kashmere Gardens. Texas Department of State Health Services report identified several census tracts in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens communities with greater-than-expected incidences of adult cancers of the lung, esophagus, and throat. The Houston Health Department conducted an initial community health assessment, follow-up door-to-door outreach, and hosted a community health and wellness fair to connect the community to resources. The department will conduct additional outreach to collect more in-depth information on households that reported certain housing or cancer concerns.
